Troubleshooting an Unable to Unpack Upgrade File Error

When uploading an upgrade image to a Delphix Engine, you may face an Unable to unpack upgrade file error in the actions list

Screenshot 2024-02-05 at 16.08.12.png

If you click on the Details link, you will see the following the Command Output section:

Unable to read version info from image. Failed to extract upgrade image. Check if the Delphix Engine root pool is out of space.

This article provides some steps to troubleshoot this error.

To resolve an Unable to Unpack Upgrade File Error

The Unable to unpack upgrade file error may be triggered by a number of conditions. Below is a non-exhaustive list with steps to remediate.

Incorrect Upgrade Image

Confirm that the file is a standard upgrade file, this will usually end with the string _Standard_Upgrade.tar

If any other file is uploaded (for example a .ova installation image), you will likely receive this error.

Resolution

Download the correct upgrade image from download.delphix.com.

Previously Uploaded Upgrade Images

Check whether any other upgrade images are already uploaded to the engine, but not installed (previously installed images do not use up capacity).

If another image is already uploaded and unpacked, this may not leave enough room to upload and unpack the latest upgrade image.

Resolution

Remove any other uploaded upgrade images.

Incorrect Upgrade Version

Confirm that the upgrade version you are attempting to upload is compatible with the currently running version.

Generally speaking you can upgrade directly to any version released within 12 months of the currently running version.

Confirm whether the version you are attempting to upgrade to is compatible, you can do so via the Upgrade Matrix in the Delphix Documentation.

Resolution

Remove the incompatible version and upload the correct version.

Internal Storage Pool Out of Space

The available capacity of the internal storage pool (rpool) may be nearly exhausted, possibly due to crash dumps/cores created by the Delphix Engine.

A Delphix Support Engineer will need to review data from the engine to diagnose/troubleshoot this.

Resolution

Raise a case with Delphix Support and upload a support bundle from the engine (see Creating and Uploading a Support Bundle to Delphix (KBA1459)).
