TB038 Windows vFiles Provisioning May Delete Files in Mount Path

Alert Type

Data Loss

Impact

The Delphix vFiles feature allows data from unstructured files to be ingested then subsequently provisioned on multiple environments. As part of the procedure for provisioning vFiles, users supply a Mount Path designating a directory on the Target Environment (host) where an iSCSI logical unit (LUN) will be mounted. If the designated directory is not empty, Delphix will inadvertently delete files in the directory. This can lead to data loss and outages arising from affected missing files.

Contributing Factors

The issue only occurs when provisioning vFiles to a Microsoft Windows Environment (host).

The issue only occurs when a Mount Path supplied during provisioning specifies a non-empty directory.

The issue may occur in the following Delphix Engine releases:

  • Delphix Engine 4.1.0.0

  • Delphix Engine 4.1.2.0

  • Delphix Engine 4.1.3.0, 4.1.3.1 and 4.1.3.2

  • Delphix Engine 4.1.4.0

  • Delphix Engine 4.1.5.0

Symptoms

Not applicable

Relief/Workaround

When provisioning vFiles to a Microsoft Windows Environment, specify a Mount Path of a directory that is empty.

Resolution

The issue is fully resolved in Delphix Engine 5.1.3.1, file a support ticket to upgrade the Delphix Engine.
