Availability

Impact

During an attempt to expand storage on one or more existing devices, the Continuous Data (formerly Virtualization) Engine becomes unresponsive, the management interface becomes unavailable, and VDBs may also become unresponsive or crash. Device expansion does not complete. Rebooting does not restore operation.

Contributing Factors

This article applies to the following versions of the Delphix engine:

Symptoms

The engine management interface becomes unavailable and VDBs may become unresponsive after an attempt to expand a storage device, rendering the engine unresponsive. Device expansion does not complete. Since the IO pipeline is stalled, targets could see “NFS server not responding” type errors in the syslog/console of affected target environments. Rebooting the engine does not restore operation.

Relief/Workaround

Upgrade to Continuous Data 11.0.0.0 or later.

Resolution

The issue is resolved in DevOps Data Platform 11.0.0.0 and later versions for Continuous Data Engines.

A reboot upgrade is required for the fix to be effective in upgrade to 11.0.0.0; upgrades to 12.0.0.0 or later do not require a reboot upgrade, and fix can be delivered in a deferred upgrade (Delay the reboot).
