How to use the advanced section of the retention policy wizard

The retention policy wizard allows the user to either modify the existing default retention policy or create a new one based on their requirements.

As outlined in the Delphix documentation - Policies for Scheduled Jobs, retention time for snapshots must be equal to, or longer than, the retention time for logs.

However, it is possible to further customise the policy for snapshots, to allow individual snapshots to be retained for period longer than the general retention policy.

The purpose of this article is to explain how the advanced section of the retention policy wizard is administered, and what results should be expected as a result of the changes made.

To use the advanced section of the retention policy wizard

Editing the general policy

  1. Log in to the Management Application
  2. Navigate to Manage > Policies
  3. Switch to the Retention tab
  4. Either edit an existing retention policy or create a new one

  1. After setting how long logs and snapshots should be set for, click Show Advanced

In the advanced section you have 4 additional settings that can be harnessed to retain snapshots outside the realm of the regular retention policy.

Each section will behave as follows:

  1. Keep n Snapshot(s) everyday

- Keep 1 snapshot for the n most recent days, where there has been a snapshot taken on that day, including the most recent day, even if it is inside the regular retention policy for snapshots.

  1. Keep n Snapshot(s) on every <day of the week>

- Keep 1 snapshot for the n most recent <day of the week>, where there has been a snapshot taken on that <day of the week>, including the most recent <day of the week>, even if it is inside the regular retention policy for snapshots.

  1. Keep n Snapshot(s) on <day number> of every month

- Keep 1 snapshot for the n most recent <day number> of the month, where there has been a snapshot taken on the <day number> of the month, including the most recent <day number> of the month, even if it is inside the regular retention policy for snapshots.

  1. Keep n Snapshot(s) on <month and day> every year

- Keep 1 snapshot for the n most recent <month and day> of the year, where there has been a snapshot taken on the <month and day> of the year, including the most recent <month and day> of the year, even if it is inside the regular retention policy for snapshots.

Example retention policy with advanced parameters set

  • In this engine, 4 snapshots have been taken on Wednesday on the last 4 weeks

  • The retention policy has been set to "Keep 3 snapshot(s) on every Wednesday" and "Other snapshots/logs will be removed after 7 days"

clipboard_edbd7d647c5b91b636cdb1379c46b89f3.png

  • After the policy has run, we can see that all of the snapshots for Wed May 20th have been removed, 1 is left on Wed May 27th and Wed Jun 3rd, and all 4 snapshots remain on Wed Jun 10th as this is less than the 7 days retention period
