Understanding the Origin of Delphix Date and Timestamps (KBA1107)

Dates and Timestamps

Date and timestamps appear in several places within the Graphical User Interface (GUI) and the Command Line Interface (CLI). This article provides information on the origin of these timestamps, why they were chosen, and their configurability.

Time and date data is sourced from three areas within a Delphix ecosystem:

  • Browser time
  • Source database
  • Delphix Engine

Time and date information via the CLI

Time and date stamps are presented as UTC within the CLI.

There is no conversion to a configurable locale as is the case with time and date information presented in the Graphical User Interface. UTC as expressed in the CLI is ultimately dependent on either the NTP (Network Time Protocol) configuration or based on the timing provided during installation.

Time and date information via the GUI

Browser time

For users and administrators running the User Interface (UI) on local systems, the time and date stamp local to their own computer is visible when viewing metrics covering audits, events, capacity, network, disk, CPU and memory.

Configurable: Yes, from local computer.

- System > Audit
- System > Event Viewer
- Resources > Performance Analytics

Source database

The merit in keeping a separate source database date and time relates primarily to the fact that the Delphix Engine must cover more than one database source. As it is not unusual for different source databases to be located in different physical time zones, differentiation on this basis is required. Tracking objects such as snapshots in the database source local time is logical and functionally desirable for many customers.

Configurable: Yes, from the source host.

- dSource and VDB timeflow cards, which are created and displayed after each successful snapshot against a source.
- Snapshot policies displayed within the Graphical User Interface (GUI) are run based on the timezone of the source database.

Delphix Engine

The time and date stamp is an important setting included within the Delphix system locale as it provides one source of timing visible to users. Delphix Engine time and date stamps are exposed to users to track events directly tied to the Engine itself, for example the timing of a job or throwing of a fault.

Configurable: Yes, on the Delphix Engine as the sysadmin user.

- Manage > Dashboard: Job History
- Faults
